Wind Power Turkey 2009 Review

The inaugural Wind Power Turkey 2009 conference, the official event of the Turkish Wind Energy Association was held in Istanbul (8th – 9th December 2009) and was attended by 200 participants over the 2 days from 10 countries worldwide, with sponsorship from Askaynak/Lincoln Electric, Alstom, Anemos, Megajoule, RES, PowerWind and Coli and Normed.  The exhibition was a complete sell-out.

This key regional event examined the current and future wind power markets in Turkey with in-depth analysis and wind operator/developer case studies.  The Turkish government and regulatory authorities have made a push for increased electricity production from renewable sources and are increasingly promoting wind power to bolster the country’s power supply.  Turkey is the 6th largest electricity market in Europe and one of the fastest growing globally, so there is huge growth potential for wind power in Turkey in the future.

Amongst the top five growing wind markets, GWEC expect to see a boom in Turkey before the other emerging markets in Europe.

Currently, there is around 728MW of wind power installed in Turkey with 300MW under construction.  In Q4 2010, the TWEA predict around 1000MW.  The biggest barrier to date is grid connection.  The EIE see 10,000 MW potential for offshore wind and higher potential for onshore wind than currently in operation, with 11, 193 MW potential in 2013 and 20,000 MW potential in 2023.  The MENR (Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources) has set a target of up to 20,000 MW of wind energy by 2020.

Green Power Conferences and the Turkish Wind Energy Association collaborated to bring together key players in the wind industry, who are driving the development of wind power generation in Turkey.  Key speakers included senior representatives from MENR (Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources), EMRA (Turkish Energy Market Regulatory Authority), EIE (General Directorate of Electrical Power Resources Survey and Development Administration), Ataseven Energy, Polat Energy, Turcas Petrol, Zorlu Energy, Alstom, RES, TKSB, Garanti Bank and Garrad Hassan.
